Have you met Nurse Noosa?

In exciting news for our local prostate cancer community, Icon Cancer Centre Noosa, in partnership with Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia, has welcomed Michelle Sumegi as our dedicated Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse.

This free service, available to all local patients diagnosed with prostate cancer, provides an essential layer of support regardless of where patients are receiving treatment. Self-referrals are welcome, as well as referrals from GPs and specialists.

Who is Michelle Sumegi?

Michelle brings over 13 years of experience working in cancer care services to this vital role. Her extensive background includes providing care to community members, inpatients and outpatients with medical oncology, radiation oncology and haematological conditions.

Having completed her Bachelor of Nursing from Queensland University of Technology in 2010 and a Postgraduate Certificate in Palliative Care from Flinders University in 2021, Michelle is currently furthering her expertise by studying a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Oncology Nursing) at the University of Tasmania.

Throughout 2024, Michelle has undertaken specialised training from the University of Technology Sydney to enhance her prostate cancer expertise, including courses on:

  • Managing Localised and Locally Advanced Prostate Cancer
  • Managing Advanced and Metastatic Prostate Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer Survivorship Care in Practice
  • Managing Sexuality and Intimacy after Treatment
  • Managing Urinary and Bowel Issues after Treatment
  • Understanding Psychosocial Aspects of Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing

How can Michelle help?

As a Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse, Michelle provides comprehensive and confidential supportive care, understanding the specific needs of prostate cancer patients. Her support includes:

  • Providing an ongoing point of contact and support
  • Coordinating patient care throughout the cancer journey
  • Assisting patients to access services both in the hospital and community
  • Providing reliable information regarding diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Helping patients to manage treatment related side effects
  • Assisting patients to access support groups and supportive resources

Michelle works at Icon Cancer Centre Noosa on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8.00am to 4.30pm. Icon Noosa is a dedicated radiation treatment facility offering a comprehensive range of radiation therapy treatments with no wait list, ensuring consultation and treatment in a timely manner.
